Surgical Services Q&A

Who needs surgical services?

At the podiatry and foot surgery specialty practice of Dr. Robert Darrin Hurst, surgical services refer to any procedures that require surgical intervention. In general, surgery isn’t the first-line approach for many foot issues.

In fact, Dr. Hurst frequently treats problems involving the feet and ankles using proven conservative approaches, like orthotics, splinting, cortisone injections, and medication.

But if you have a foot problem that doesn’t respond to conservative methods of treatment, or if you have a serious structural foot problem, surgical services might be the right choice.

What types of surgical services are available?

Dr. Robert Darrin Hurst offers a range of surgical services in the in-office surgical suite, including:

Bunion surgery

Bunion surgery repositions the largest of your big toe joints and minimizes the bony bump of the bunion. It provides a true correction for bunions, versus nonsurgical methods that only manage symptoms.

Hammertoe surgery

Hammertoe surgery treats the middle joint in the second, third, or fourth toes. There are several methods of surgery, including joint fusion (connecting two bones together and eliminating movement), ligament and tendon lengthening, and pin placement.

Fracture repair

Fracture surgery involves restoring the position and function of broken bones in the foot. One common method for doing so is the placement of surgical hardware that holds the bones in position as they heal.

Neuroma surgery

Neuromas are balls of nerve tissue that can cause serious pain. They often appear between toes, making standing and walking painful. Neuroma surgery, which is usually only needed in extreme cases, can remove the neuroma and relieve pain.

In addition, Dr. Hurst treats many other problems in his surgical suite, including plantar warts (warts on the bottom of the feet) and skin lesions.

Do I need anesthesia to receive surgical services?

Yes, in general, most surgeries require anesthesia. But because the problems are confined to the feet, you most likely need only local anesthesia to prevent you from feeling pain during your surgery.

Because Dr. Hurst performs surgery on-site, you’re able to return home shortly after the procedure. He always takes the time to explain what you need to do at home as you recover, and you’ll have a follow-up appointment soon to make sure you’re recovering properly.

With Dr. Robert Darrin Hurst, you’re working with a truly elite foot surgeon with 20-plus years of experience. To schedule your consultation, call the nearest office or book online now.
